"The Marriage of Maria Braun" by German film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1979.
I agree with one of the reviews on IMDb; it is a tale about how Germany was rebuilt by women post WWII, while losing their selves in the process. The first scene where two couples were desperate to have their marriage papers signed and finalized in the midst of a bombing raid, and the last scene where the irony and the levity of it all shocks the viewer, are definitely two memorable scenes which will linger in my mind for quite some time.
